Lanzhou is situated in the southeastern side of the province on the upper course of the Huang He (Yellow River), where the river emerges from the mountains.
Lanzhou has been an importnat centre since early times, being at the southern end of the route leading via the Gansu (Hexi) Corridor across Central Asia.
Cultural exchanges and working visits took place between the two cities to identify opportunities for collaboration.
There is also a university collaboration between the University of 1 Decembrie 1918 in Alba Iulia and the University of Lanzhou.
The two cities twinned in 2010.
