Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of the writer Miguel de Cervantes, was included by UNESCO in the World Heritage list in 1998, as the city was the first in the world designed and built solely to host a university and to be a model for other training centers in Europe and America.

Alcalá de Henares has a large community of Romanians.

Alcala de Henares twinned with Alba Iulia in 2002.
